Inter- and transdisciplinary research on sustainable resource use - Methodologies & Case studies
Leipziger KUBUS - The UFZ conference venue
Fr 30.01.2009, 14 h - Su 01.02.2009, 14 h
Motivation of the Workshop:
The idea of the workshop is to reflect and discuss essential elements of an effective inter- respectively transdisciplinary research process and to learn about suitable tools and methodologies. This will be done theory-based but especially illustrated with good and bad practice examples or case studies from the field of sustainable resource use (mostly in drylands).
Target audience:
The Workshop addresses up to 40 junior (e.g. advanced PhD students or postdocs) and senior scientists as well as members of development organisations working in the area of sustainable resource use, who already work or plan to work in a inter- or transdisciplinary research context.
Concept and Keynote Speakers
The three core aims of the workshop are:
1. to provide an active panel for an open exchange of experiences on successful approaches and possible obstacles, pitfalls and limits of inter- and transdisciplinary research;
2. to provide tools and methodologies that can help and facilitate the inter- and transdisciplinary research process;
3. therewith to assist scientists, to become aware of the challenges, obstacles and possibilities of inter- and transdisciplinary research concepts and be better prepared to manage and implement them;
Concept of the event:
The Workshop is structured into three consecutive programme components:
1. Key note talks on theory and principles of inter- and transdisciplinary research
2. Parallel Sessions: Presentation and discussion of practical experiences with inter- and transdisciplinary research (good and bad practice examples)
3. Seminar on tools for organisation and implementation of inter- and transdisciplinary research guided by an experienced coach
Key-notes:
* Prof Dr. Christoph Görg, Chair of Environmental Governance, University of Kassel, Dept. of Social Sciences Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig
* Dr. Thomas Jahn, ISOE, Institute for Social Ecological Research, Frankfurt
* Prof. Dr. Susanne Stoll-Kleemann, University Greifswald, Chair of Applied Geography and Sustainability Science
More information will soon be available on the Workshop website:
30. March - 2. April 2008, Tharandt
We will bring together specialist groups of different research fields to discuss current progress and challenges of functional plant ecology. We want to present process related experimental ecological research on different scales – from plant parts to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems

Global climate and institutional changes are a huge challenge for sustainable use of rangelands. Aim of the workshop is to bring together various disciplines dealing with rangelands in drylands (including Europe). Topics are e.g. rangeland ecology, biodiversity, socio-economy, human ecology, and sustainable management. The workshop took place at the UFZ-Kubus in Leipzig from 2.-3. February 2008
