Restoration Ecology

Many landscapes and ecosystems in Europe have been ecologically devastated due to mining, soil exploitation, intensive agricultural land use, urbanisation etc. Ecological restoration aims at assisting the recovery of ecological processes in such areas in order to regenerate a critical range of ecological integrity.

These aims are imbedded in the framework of national and EU-legislation (e.g. FFH-directive). Their realization require a trans-disciplinary approach which integrates different ecological disciplines (e.g. soil science, vegetation science, hydrology), landscape planning and socio-economic sciences and therefore, demand multiple co-operations.

The tasks comprise the elaboration of deficient basic ecological aspects, the development of ecological targets and evaluation procedures, the planning of suitable restoration measures and assessments of their feasibility. Very important, therefore, is the cooperation and exchange with practitioners from the official administration and NGO’s.
